If you are taking Anatomy & Physiology, you probably need to access peer reviewed, primary research articles. Here are our best resources to help you find what you need! Contact the Library for database login information or answers to your research questions.
Key Concepts
Peer-review: an academic publishing process through which a study is read and reviewed by a panel of experts in the field and revised by the author prior to publication
Primary research: articles reporting original research, such as the author's findings from a survey or experiment. Research articles have five sections:
Introduction
Materials and Methods
Results
Discussion
Conclusion
Searching
Start your research at the enCompass search bar on the Library homepage. This search bar gives you access to all of our electronic resources. If you use enCompass off campus, you will be prompted to enter your TVCC Library card number before accessing any articles. Request your library card using this form.
When you search for peer reviewed research, use specific search terms. Use quotation marks around phrases and Boolean operators (and, not, or) to narrow your search. These research tools will help you combine concepts to find the best results. Your search terms may look like these:
"protein synthesis"
kidney and elderly or "ages 65-80"
"Cardiovascular disease" in homeless
Source Type
In the left-hand column of the enCompass discovery service, you will see a menu of limiters. Choose to limit your search to "full-text" and "peer reviewed." But be careful! Not all of the results you see will be peer reviewed primary research. Some will be case studies, literature reviews, or opinion pieces. Before you commit to reading a full article, skim to see if it has all of the sections a primary research article should have.
Citation
You'll have to cite your sources in APA. Any article you access on the research databases comes with a citation tool. Double-check the accuracy of the pre-generated citation by consulting our citation page.
